Up until the late 1970s, all activities of the state of Sikkim that pertained to engineering were being handled by the nodal Sikkim Public Works Department of the Government of Sikkim. However, there came a time when there was an urgent need for restructuring and as a result of this, in the year 1977, the Buildings & Housing Department was born.
As per the Government of Sikkim (Allocation of Business Rules) 2017, the Buildings and Housing Department presently carries out Survey, Investigation, Planning & Design, Estimation, Execution, Allotment and Maintenance of Government Office Buildings, Non-Residential Public Buildings and Semi-Government organization including those of autonomous bodies like Boards, Corporation and Companies, Raj Bhawan Buildings and Government Quarters. In addition, the Buildings and Housing Department is also responsible for allotment of Government Quarters, rent assessment, valuation of buildings, preparation of Specifications and Schedule of Rates for building works and appointment of consultants for building design and construction.
From Public Buildings like the State of the Art Secretariat Building at Tashiling, the Sikkim Judicial Academy and the State Museum to construction of Holy Statues of Deities like the Chenrezig Statue and Skywalk Project to the completion of the State of the Art Multi Sports Complex, Paljor Stadium as well as the 1000-bedded Multi Speciality Hospital - the Buildings and Housing Department has undertaken, supervised and implemented a variety of projects within as well as outside the state of Sikkim.
