Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Programme Celebrates the Spirit, Potential and Empowerment of the Girl Child in Soreng District.
Soreng, 16 October 2026: The Women, Child, Senior Citizens and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, Soreng, organised an awareness programme under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child at Sora School, Soreng District.
The programme aimed to promote gender equality, encourage girls’ education, strengthen awareness of child rights and protection, and create an enabling environment where every girl child can realise her full potential.
The programme commenced with an opening song presented by the students of Class VII, followed by a welcome address by Mr. Nidup Tshering Bhutia, Principal of Sora School, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries, departmental officials, teachers, and students.
The event witnessed the participation of students, teachers, departmental officials, Anganwadi Workers, and representatives of child protection and support services. The programme featured informative addresses by Mrs. Tek Maya Sharma, Protection Officer, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU); Mrs. Deborah Lepcha, Project Coordinator, Child Helpline Unit; and Ms. Rinzing Tamang, Central Administrator, One Stop Centre (OSC). Their addresses highlighted the importance of child rights, safety, protection, and the support services available to children and women in need.
Mrs. Gauri Tamang, CDPO-cum-DD, Soreng, addressed the gathering on the significance of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative and the International Day of the Girl Child. She emphasised the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for girls in education, personal development, and participation in society. She also highlighted the collective responsibility of families, educational institutions, communities, and government departments in creating a safe, inclusive, and gender-sensitive environment for every girl child.
Special Initiative: “My Vision, My Board – The Tree of Dreams”
A special initiative titled “My Vision, My Board – The Tree of Dreams” was introduced as part of the programme to provide girl students with a creative platform to express their dreams, aspirations, and vision for the future. Under this initiative, the girls wrote their individual dreams and goals on cards, which were displayed on a creatively designed tree symbolising growth, hope, equality, and the limitless potential of every girl child.
The initiative encouraged the girls to think about their future ambitions, recognise their abilities, and express their aspirations relating to education, careers, personal development, and their future roles in society. The Tree of Dreams served as a visual representation of their hopes and ambitions, reinforcing the message that every girl deserves the encouragement, opportunities, and support necessary to turn her dreams into reality.
This initiative added a meaningful and participatory dimension to the celebration, emphasising that the empowerment of girls begins by listening to their voices, respecting their aspirations, and creating opportunities for them to grow, learn, and succeed.
Competitions and Cultural Activities
To encourage creativity, confidence, and active participation among students, various activities were organised, including a drawing competition, talent hunt, and open quiz competition. Students of Sora School showcased their talents through dance performances, while Ms. Preeti Subba, Data Entry Operator (DEO), presented a dance performance that added to the enthusiasm and celebratory spirit of the occasion.
These activities provided students with a platform to showcase their abilities, express their ideas, and reflect on the importance of gender equality, education, and the empowerment of girls. The programme also included a feedback session involving one teacher and one student, providing an opportunity to share their experiences and perspectives.
The event was followed by the evaluation of the competitions and a prize distribution ceremony to recognise and encourage the participants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the valuable contributions of the dignitaries, departmental officials, school authorities, teachers, students, and all those involved in making the event successful.
Participation and Community Engagement
The programme was attended by Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) from Upper Sribadam, Dhankutey, and Deythang, along with additional Anganwadi Workers from Upper Sribadam and Lower Sribadam, as well as staff members of the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Soreng.
Their participation highlighted the importance of grassroots-level engagement and coordination among frontline workers, educational institutions, and government departments in promoting girls’ education, child protection, gender equality, and community awareness.
The programme reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to advancing the objectives of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao by promoting the education, protection, dignity, and empowerment of every girl child. It also underscored the importance of collective efforts in ensuring that girls have equal opportunities to learn, grow, lead, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The programme concluded with a powerful message: every girl deserves the right to education, safety, dignity, equal opportunities, and the freedom to dream. When girls are encouraged to envision their future, they take the first step towards building it.
