Gangtok, October 7 (IPR): A press briefing was convened by the Students Welfare Board, Education Department, at a local hotel in Gangtok today to outline details of the 2nd Edition of the State Level Students Assembly 2026.
Addressing the media, MLA for Soreng-Chakung and Vice President in-charge of the SKM Student Wing, Mr Aditya Golay, provided details regarding the event. He noted that scheduling the event for 15 October holds special significance, as it marks both World Students' Day and the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Mr Golay recalled that the first edition of the initiative was successfully held on 19 August 2023, during Mr Arun Upreti’s tenure as Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, with the support of the Assembly Secretariat and the SKM Student Wing.
He attributed the inception of the project to the vision of the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Singh Tamang, who encouraged the Student Wing to actively engage the state's youth.
Mr Golay further explained that the theme for the 2nd edition is 'Sikkim at 2047: Voices of the Youth'. Aligning with the discussions around 'Viksit Bharat @2047', ‘Sikkim @2047’ and ‘Vision Document’ the assembly aims to provide a platform for young people to express their vision for Sikkim’s future. He shared that the selection process was conducted across various government and private degree, medical, engineering, nursing, and B.Ed. colleges. From 8th to 14th October, the Sikkim Legislative Assembly will host orientation and grooming sessions for the selected students, training them on legal procedures, bill introductions, and parliamentary debates.
Mr Golay further elaborated that the documentation and key outcomes of this assembly will later be submitted to the ITS Committee, the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat, and the State Government.
Elaborating on the organisational details, Chairman, Students Welfare Board, Mr Sonam Chopel Sherpa stated that nominations officially closed on 6th October, with two student delegates selected from each participating institution. A total of 29 participants have been confirmed so far from multiple districts. He then gave a district-wise list of all the participating colleges.
