Fisheries Department, Pakyong District Inspects Ongoing PMMSY Projects
Pakyong, September 29: The Fisheries Department, Pakyong District, led by the District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO), along with the Block Officer, Feed Mill Operator, Office Assistant-cum-Farm In-charge, Fisheries Guards and Assistant Fisheries Guards, conducted a field inspection of various ongoing fisheries development projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The team visited the Feed Mill at Sisney, Rongli, established by the Regu Fish Farmers Producer Organisation (FFPO). The ₹30 lakh unit, supported through a 60% Government subsidy and 40% beneficiary contribution, is nearing completion and will produce carp fish feed. The facility is expected to improve local feed availability, reduce transportation costs and minimise supply disruptions arising from frequent road blockages. It will also be the first functional feed mill established through FFPO in the district.
At Makaibari, Rongli, the team monitored the ongoing construction of a Carp Hatchery, which is also nearing completion. Once operational, the hatchery will strengthen the availability of quality carp seed and support local aquaculture production.
The team further inspected the Recreational Fisheries project at Aritar Lake, implemented by the Aritar Dalapchand Lampokhari Lake Development Society. The ₹50 lakh project, supported through a 60% Government subsidy and 40% beneficiary contribution, includes an Aquarium Gallery showcasing locally available fish species. The initiative is intended to promote recreational fisheries and tourism while creating additional livelihood opportunities for the local community.
At Khamdong, the team reviewed the progress of a Trout Fish Hatchery established by a progressive fish farmer under PMMSY. The ₹50 lakh project, supported on a 60:40 subsidy-to-beneficiary contribution basis, is nearing completion and is expected to augment the availability of quality trout seed within the State.
The field inspection reflects the Department’s continued commitment to effective implementation, regular monitoring and timely completion of PMMSY projects. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening fish seed and feed availability, promoting sustainable aquaculture, diversifying fisheries activities and enhancing livelihood opportunities for farmers and local communities across Sikkim.
