Joint Inspection Conducted at Upper Samdong Following Complaints of Damage to Residential Properties
Gangtok, 23rd September 2026: A joint inspection was conducted at Upper Samdong, Gangtok District, on 23rd September 2026 under the leadership of Shri Sisum Wangchuk Bhutia, ADC, Gangtok, following complaints regarding damage to residential properties located in the vicinity of the PowerGrid premises.
The inspection was carried out by a joint team comprising representatives from the DDMA, Gangtok; Mines & Geology Department; Power Department; Rakdong Tintek Block; Revenue Department; PowerGrid; the concerned Ward Panchayat; and the affected families.
During the inspection, the team observed that the drainage arrangements associated with the PowerGrid premises require detailed technical assessment and necessary improvement. Cracks were also observed on the floors and walls of approximately 10 residential houses located below the PowerGrid property.
The team further observed that the existing protection and retaining structures in the area require necessary repair, strengthening and maintenance to address the prevailing concerns and minimise the risk of further damage or any untoward incident.
The Mines & Geology Department will undertake a detailed technical assessment to determine the nature and extent of the reported damage and examine the possible factors contributing to the same. The Department will submit its findings and recommendations following the assessment.
Further necessary action and appropriate remedial measures will be considered by the District Administration based on the findings and recommendations of the technical assessment.
As an immediate precautionary measure, PowerGrid was advised to ensure effective drainage, undertake necessary maintenance and strengthening of the existing protection and retaining structures, and take all appropriate safety measures to address immediate concerns in the area.
The District Administration will continue to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate measures based on the outcome of the technical assessment and subsequent recommendations.
The administration remains committed to ensuring the safety of the affected residents and addressing the concerns in a timely and coordinated manner.
