The Hon'ble Governor inaugurated the first academic session of 'Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College'; a golden chapter in the history of Sikkim.  
Today, a dignified programme was organised on the occasion of the inauguration of the first academic session of the first government medical college, "Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College" in Sikkim State. On this historic occasion, the Hon'ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, was present as the chief guest. On this occasion, Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang was also present in a dignified manner.  
The program was attended by the Hon'ble ministers, MLAs, people's representatives, senior administrative officers, Dean and faculty members of the medical college, newly admitted students and their guardians in large numbers.
In the first phase of the program, the Hon'ble Governor visited the newly constructed "Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College" campus in Sokethang along with the Hon'ble Chief Minister and inspected the preparations for the academic session. On this occasion, the unveiling of the statue of the great freedom fighter Helen Lepcha, after whom the institution is named, and the official logo of the medical college were also done.
After the inspection and unveiling program, the main ceremony was held at the Manan Kendra. Here, a white-coat ceremony was organised for the first batch of students of the medical college, in which the Hon'ble Governor provided white coats to the newly admitted students. In this sequence, the oath-taking ceremony was also held.
Addressing the ceremony, the Hon'ble Governor expressed his personal delight at this achievement and congratulated the tireless efforts of the Sikkim government. He said that the establishment of a government medical college in the state marks the beginning of a new era in the field of medical education and health services. Through this institution, students will get the opportunity to receive quality medical education within the state.
Expressing gratitude towards this institution inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, he said that this historic step embodies the vision of Hon'ble Prime Minister ji's "Developed India @2047" and particularly the vision of making the Northeast a new engine of the country's development.
Expressing delight at the naming of the institution, the Hon'ble Governor said that the naming is a symbol of the highest respect for women's power, for which Sikkim is renowned throughout the country. The land of Sikkim has always been a witness to its pioneering role in empowering women, self-respect and building society.
The Governor congratulated all the first-batch students of the medical college and urged them to fulfil their duties with full dedication, human values, and a sense of service. He said that the first batch will set such values, and future generations will follow them. Therefore, it is essential to establish good conduct and human values.  
He urged the teaching staff not only to make the students doctors, but also to instill in them a strong foundation of morality, sensitivity, and accountability towards society.
