DDMA Gangtok Conducts Intensive Damage Assessment Following Widespread Landslides.
Gangtok, September 17, 2026:
In view of the ongoing heavy rainfall and its impact across various parts of Gangtok District, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok, has undertaken an intensive assessment of damage caused by landslides and other rain-related incidents across the district.
The Hon’ble Area MLA, Kabi Tingda Constituency, Mr T. T. Bhutia, along with the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Hon’ble MLA, Councillor, Joint Director, DDMA, Gangtok, Divisional Engineer, NH Wing, Roads & Bridges Department, Block Development Officer, Ranka, and Revenue Surveyors, accompanied by their respective teams, conducted field inspections of the affected areas to assess the extent of damage caused by landslides and heavy rainfall.
The inspection covered several locations in and around Gangtok affected by landslides, road blockages, mud and debris flow, damage to residential structures and disruption of road connectivity.
As an immediate precautionary measure, tarpaulins have been provided at vulnerable slide areas, wherever necessary, to prevent further entry of rainwater and minimise the risk of further aggravation of affected slopes.
During the field inspections, the teams interacted with affected residents and advised them to remain vigilant, particularly during night hours, and to take necessary precautions in view of continued rainfall and the possibility of further slope instability and landslide activity.
The affected locations include Luing–Ranka Highway near Bojoghari, Lower Bojoghari, Lingding, High Court Road, TNA Gate, VIP Colony, Upper Z-Bojoghari, Pangthang–Lingdok Road, Pamro Gaon, Ling Perbing, Upper and Middle Luing, Phenzong, Ranka, Rakdong Tintek, Daragaon Upper Burtuk, Sichey, Arithang and other adjoining areas.
Several road stretches have been affected by landslides, mud and debris flow, causing obstruction and restricted vehicular movement. Residential houses and other structures have also sustained damage, with some structures rendered vulnerable due to landslide activity.
Public infrastructure has also been affected, including the Sewage Treatment Plant at Sichey. Debris accumulation near the Enchey School 33/11 kV Switching Station has also been identified as a potential hazard. Road connectivity remains affected at multiple locations.
As part of the immediate response and restoration measures, District Collector cum Chairman, DDMA, Gangtok District, has directed the concerned line departments and agencies to undertake clearance of affected roads and debris, restoration of connectivity, assessment and verification of damages, and provision of necessary assistance to affected persons.
Field teams are conducting ground-level inspections and verification to assess the extent of damage and determine the interventions required at vulnerable and affected locations. Necessary response and restoration measures are being undertaken at identified sites.
District Collector cum Chairman, DDMA, Gangtok District, also appeals to the public to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary movement through landslide-prone and vulnerable areas, and remain alert during continued rainfall. Residents living near vulnerable slopes are particularly advised to remain vigilant during night hours and avoid approaching unstable slopes, active landslide sites, or areas with accumulated mud and debris.
The public is also advised to immediately inform the concerned authorities of any signs of slope movement, cracks on the ground or structures, falling rocks or debris, or any other emergency, to facilitate timely response and necessary assistance.
