LANDSLIDE DISRUPTS ROAD CONNECTIVITY TO 72nd BATTALION SSB HEADQUARTERS IN GYALSHING, SIKKIM
Gyalshing, September 2, 2026: On September 2, 2026, between approximately 0630 hours and 0700 hours, a major landslide occurred at Rimbi, under Rimbi–Singlitam Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU), District Gyalshing, approximately 4.5 km from the 72nd Battalion Headquarters.
A large quantity of landslide debris, accompanied by a heavy flow of water from Siksa Khola (stream), caused damage to the road on the Geyzing–Pelling–Yuksom route (State Highway-27). As a result, the road connectivity to the 72nd Battalion Headquarters has been completely disrupted, and vehicular movement on the route has been brought to a halt.
Fortunately, no loss of life or damage to property has been reported in the incident.
A joint inspection of the affected site was conducted by the Commandant, 72nd Battalion; District Magistrate, Gyalshing; Assistant Superintendent of Police, Gyalshing; Superintending Engineer (Electricity); Executive Engineer (Road and Bridge Construction); representatives of the Forest Department, Gyalshing; and President, Rimbi GPU, Shri Mangal Rai.
During the inspection, the officials assessed the situation arising from the landslide, the extent of the road blockage, and the measures required for restoration of connectivity. Necessary action has already been initiated for restoration of the affected route.
On the request of the District Magistrate, Gyalshing, the RRT (Rescue Relief Team) of 72nd Battalion, SSB, Yuksom, along with other personnel of the Battalion, has been deployed and is actively coordinating with the district administration and concerned executing agencies. The RRT team is assisting in the removal of landslide debris, clearing the affected road, and restoration of connectivity. The team is also maintaining close coordination with the local administration to provide immediate assistance as required.
Additional road construction and restoration work has been initiated to reopen the Geyzing–Pelling–72nd Battalion–Yuksom road. The restoration of connectivity is expected to take approximately 3–4 days, depending on site conditions and the progress of work.
For the reconstruction of the damaged road and bridge section, approximately 30 metres in length, and for making the route fully suitable for the movement of heavy vehicles, an estimated period of 3–4 months has been indicated.
The situation is being continuously monitored by the 72nd Battalion, SSB, Yuksom, in close coordination with the civil administration and concerned departments. The RRT team and other Battalion personnel remain deployed at the affected site and are extending all possible assistance for restoration of road connectivity and ensuring the safety and welfare of personnel and residents.
