Awareness Programme on Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 Held at Tashiding.
Gyalshing, 27August 2026: An awareness programme on the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 was conducted at Tashiding Gram Panchayat Unit, Chongrang Block, GyalshingDistrict, on 25 August.
The main aim of the program was for promoting responsible waste disposal, source segregation and community participation in keeping the area clean and sustainable.
The programme was organised by Kongri Tashiding ZillaTerritory in collaboration with ADC(D), Rural Development Department, Gyalshing, and was attended by Zilla PanchayatShri. Birendra Gurung, Panchayat President Shri. Sonam Gyatso Chaktha of Tashiding GPU, Panchayat Members, Panchayat staff, teachers and students of Tashiding Senior Secondary School.
The programme began with a clean-up drive led by Shri Birendra Gurung along with the students. During the activity, he observed the local sanitation situation and shared suggestions for improving waste management. He stressed that a clean and healthy Tashiding can only be achieved through the combined efforts of the Gram Panchayat, schools, businesses, households and the community as a whole.
In the second session, Ms. Yangchenla Bhutia, Resource Person, explained the major provisions of the SWM Rules, 2026 and their relevance to day-to-day waste management. She highlighted the requirement for four-way segregation at source: wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste and urged every household, shop, hotel, restaurant, institution and visitor to take responsibility for the waste they generate.
The session also covered the responsibilities of bulk waste generators, the Polluter Pays principle, restrictions on landfilling, scientific handling of legacy waste and the need to minimise waste sent to landfills. It was also highlighted that the Rules, notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, have been in force since 1 April 2026.
Panchayat President Shri. Sonam Gyatso Chaktha briefed the gathering on the applicable Gram Panchayat by-laws and encouraged the students to contribute actively towards maintaining cleanliness and supporting the developmental initiatives of the Gram Panchayat.
