Namchi, August 18: A training programme on Millet Cultivation – Package of Practices and Crop Management of Millet Variety VL 400 (Foundation seed) was organised today by the Agriculture Department, Yangang, at Upper Tokdey with the objective of promoting millet cultivation and creating awareness among farmers regarding improved production practices. The village is also a cluster for quality seed production.
The programme was attended by Hon’ble Ward Panchayat Mrs. Munna Chettri Upper Tokday, Deputy Director Agriculture, Ms. Vaishnu Rai, ADO, Ms. Florenz Bhutia, VO, Dr. Prerna Pradhan, Agri and Horti departmental officials and local farmers.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Khem Lal Sharma, Marketing Assistant.
Ms. Florenz Bhutia addressed the gathering and briefed the farmers on the objectives of the training programme along with the objectives of National Food Security and Nutrition Mission on Nutri-Cereals. She highlighted the importance of promoting nutri-cereal cultivation, particularly millets, for improving nutritional security, strengthening sustainable agriculture and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods.
Ms. Vaishnu Rai sensitised the farmers on improved cultivation practices, crop management and other important aspects related to millet production, particularly the recommended package of practices for millet variety VL 400 along with Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches to ensure healthy crop growth and sustainable production.
Dr. Prerna Pradhan highlighted about various schemes and programmes being implemented under the AH&VS Department.
Ms. Munna Chettri encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific farming practices and commended them for their efforts in promoting millet cultivation.
The participating farmers actively engaged in the programme and interacted with the departmental officials, sharing their experiences, concerns and suggestions related to millet cultivation.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Bikash Rai, Marketing Assistant.
