Namchi, August 13: A training programme on Millet Cultivation “Package of Practices and Crop Management of Millet Variety VL 379” was organised by Agriculture Department at Dara Khakra, Lingmoo Paiyong GPU, Yangang, with the aim of promoting millet-based farming in the region.
The programme was graced by Additional Director, Agriculture and Horticulture Department, Mrs. Nirmala Moktan, Hon’ble Panchayat Mrs. Ambika Sharma, Deputy Director Ms. Vaishnu Rai, Agriculture Development Officer (ADO) Ms. Florenz Bhutia, Horticulture Development Officer (HDO) Ms. Sudeshna Kharga, VLW Mr. Shiva Nath Chapagai, departmental staff, members of FPO, and local farmers.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Mr. Lok Nath Adhikari, Marketing Assistant.
The objectives of the training programme were presented by Ms. Vaishnu Rai, who briefed the farmers about the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission on Nutri-Cereals (NFSNM Nutri-Cereals) and the various interventions being implemented under the scheme to promote millet.
Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Nirmala Moktan congratulated the farmers of the area for their progressive approach towards millet cultivation. She noted that the area has emerged as one of the highest millet-producing areas in the district, reflecting the commitment and efforts of the farming community.
She encouraged farmers to focus not only on production but also on post-harvest management, processing and value addition of millet products, which can enhance farm income and create better market opportunities. She also highlighted various schemes and programmes being implemented by the Agriculture and Horticulture Department for the benefit of the farming community.
Farmers actively participated during the programme and placed their demands and suggestions before the departmental officials. The officials responded to the issues raised and assured the farmers of appropriate support and guidance through departmental programmes and schemes.
The farmers expressed their appreciation for the efforts of the Agriculture Department for continued initiatives towards strengthening and uplifting the farming community.
A practical demonstration on millet transplanting was also conducted where farmers, departmental officials and staff actively participated in the field for Millet Var. VL 379.
The programme concluded with input distribution and vote of thanks by Mr. Bijay Gurung, Marketing Assistant.
