Two-Day Sub-Division Chess Tournament Held at Yangang.
YANGANG, August 12: The two-day Sub-Division Chess Tournament, organised as part of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, concluded at PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School, Yangang, bringing together 89 young chess players from schools in and around the Yangang area.
The tournament was organised by the IDCC, Yangang Sub-Division, in collaboration with the Sikkim Chess Association (SCA), under the guidance and encouragement of Hon’ble Deputy Speaker-cum-Area MLA Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa.
The second day of the tournament was attended by Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare Department Shri GT Dhungel, Advisor Food Processing Department Shri C.L. Gurung, OSD to Health & Family Welfare Department Smt. Ganga Parsai, Shri A.D. Chettri serves as the Director of Samagra Shiksha, Textbook & Language, Principal of YSSS Yangang Shri Pushpa Raj Dhungel, Deputy Director, Horticulture Shri Hemant Ghimirey, Shri Leela Acharya, President Sikkim Chess Association, Rangang–Yangang Chess Coordinator Shri Hem Rizal, and teachers from participating schools.
The tournament was conducted in two categories. The Junior Category, comprising students up to Class VIII, featured 52 participants, while 37 students from Classes IX to XII competed in the Senior Category, taking the total participation to 89 students.
The Senior Category was conducted under the Swiss-system format over six rounds, with each game played under a time control of 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The tournament was held on August 11 and 12 at PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School, Yangang.
The top-performing contestants were felicitated with certificates by Hon’ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare Department Shri GT Dhungel, recognising their performance and encouraging their continued participation in chess and other sporting activities.
The chess competition is not a new initiative in the area. It has been organised as a recurring, student-centric activity since last year, with the continued encouragement and guidance of Deputy Speaker-cum-Area MLA Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa. The initiative aims to provide students with opportunities to develop concentration, strategic thinking, discipline and sportsmanship beyond the classroom.
With participation from 89 students across the two categories, the tournament brought together schools, teachers and young chess enthusiasts in a spirit of healthy competition, learning and camaraderie, adding a meaningful sporting dimension to the Independence Day celebrations.
