Conservation of Sikkim Heritage: Pilot Project 2026–2028 Begins Field Activities.
The “Conservation of Sikkim Heritage” Pilot Project (2026–2028) under the Himalayan Art Conservation Project, supported by Tata Trusts and implemented by the Himalayan Society for Heritage and Art Conservation (HIMSHACO) in collaboration with the Culture Department, Government of Sikkim, has commenced its field activities in the State from 3 August 2026. This project is a result of a series of successful heritage conservation workshops conducted at Sikkim State Archives by Tata Trusts over the past 5 years, in which representatives from various monasteries and institutions were trained in scientific techniques to preserve their cultural heritage.
As part of the initial phase of the project, a team of art conservators comprising Alenla Bhutia, Himansha, and Siddharth Chandra (team leader) initiated preventive conservation treatment of manuscripts, scrolls, rare coins, xylographs and other objects of historical and cultural importance at Ram Gauri Sangrahalaya, Rhenock, Pakyong District. Shri L.N. Sharma (Senior Preservation Officer), Sikkim State Archives, Culture Department, Government of Sikkim, is the liaison supporting the conservation team in Sikkim. The project director is Shri Anupam Sah, a heritage conservation specialist of international repute.
In addition to conservation treatment, the team undertook the reorganisation of artefacts on display and provided technical inputs towards the preparation of a systematic inventory and conservation report.
In the next phase of the field programme, the conservation team is scheduled to proceed to Karma Rabtenling Gompa, Ralang, South Sikkim, where conservation treatment of selected artefacts of the monastery will be undertaken in accordance with the approved work plan.
This facility for the conservation of collections and technical consultancy will be provided free of cost to all institutions in Sikkim that are interested in taking advantage of this project and strengthening their own existing efforts to preserve the glorious heritage of Sikkim.
