A meeting was organized today at Lokbhawan in the presence of Hon'ble Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur, along with the Vice-Chancellors, Secretaries, and other representatives of various universities in Sikkim. The meeting had an open session on various important topics such as detailed information about the universities, the quality of higher education in the context of Developed India 2047, promoting research and innovation, effective implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, skill development, digital education, a student-centric educational environment, and a drug-free India.
The meeting was attended by Education Minister Shri Raju Basnet, Deputy Secretary Shri Jitendra Singh Raje, senior officials from the Education Department, and officials from the Social Welfare Department.
Shri Raje provided guidance and suggestions to the universities with active participation in the discussions.
The meeting began with a detailed PowerPoint presentation, which presented the achievements and challenges of various universities in Sikkim, including their infrastructure. Subsequently, the Vice-Chancellors and the Registrar shared the status and challenges of their respective universities in an open discussion.
During the review, Education Minister Shri Raju Basnet gave strict instructions to all university heads to strictly adhere to the Sikkim Private University Establishment and Regulation Act 2025 and to compulsorily complete campus construction and other projects within the stipulated time frame.
The Governor directed the Education Minister and departmental officials to closely monitor the functioning of the universities. He said that while ensuring compliance with rules and regulations, the problems and challenges of the universities should also be carefully addressed to find solutions.
The Governor called upon the academic community to move beyond routine tasks and work with a spirit of service to society. He inspired everyone to work with the feeling of "Sikkim is my family."
The Governor mainly appealed to each university to adopt the concept of adopting a village and contributing to its holistic development. At the same time, emphasizing the promotion of Sikkim's tourism, environment, and organic farming through its academic and research activities, he said this is the true identity of Sikkim.
The Governor also emphasized the need to actively adopt a culture of new discoveries and innovation in the campuses and to play an active role in realizing the vision of the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's "Developed India 2047."
Finally, the Governor reiterated that strict compliance with government regulations and a spirit of service to society will make Sikkim an excellent center for higher education.
