DISTRICT HUB FOR EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN (DHEW) PAKYONG CONDUCTS AWARENESS PROGRAM ON POCSO , JUVENILE JUSTICE , CHILD MARRIAGE AND DOWRY PROHIBITION AT JAWAHARLAL NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA
Pakyong, July 27: The Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Pakyong District—operating under the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department (WCSS&DWD)—organized a comprehensive youth empowerment and legal awareness initiative at Jawaharlal Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV).
The administrative initiative aimed to equip school-going adolescents with essential legal knowledge, personal safety protocols, and awareness regarding state support mechanisms for child welfare. The visiting delegation was warmly welcomed by the JNV administration, led by Principal Mr. Updesh Chandra, alongside teaching faculty, staff, and students.
The session opened with an address by Mr. Alson Rai, Gender Specialist, who outlined the overarching mission of the WCSC&DWD and DHEW in safeguarding child and women's rights across the district. The session was followed by an insightful presentation from the resource person, Advocate Mrs. Trishna Chhetri, who led an in-depth session detailing critical legislation, including:
(POCSO) Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, detailing legal definitions of non-bailable offences, sexual harassment, and bodily boundaries.
Juvenile Justice Act, 2015: Overview of child-friendly legal frameworks, the mandate of the Juvenile Justice Board, and the function of the One Stop Centre (OSC) in prioritising rehabilitation over punitive measures.
Prevention of Crime & Social Evils: Sensitising attendees to the warning signs of human trafficking (including forced labour, organ trade, and sexual exploitation), child marriage, and illegal dowry practices.
Digital Literacy & Safety Protocols, where Madam warned students not to share sensitive personal data on social media; she further highlighted Emergency Support Helpline Number, which includes

Following the legal orientation, Principal Mr. Updesh Chandra expressed his sincere appreciation to the District DHEW delegation, commending the practical, actionable legal literacy brought directly to the students.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Tshering Ongmu Lepcha (DEO), acknowledging the school management, resource speakers, and student participants.
