Soreng, July 10: In continuation of the ongoing statewide celebration of Paryavaran Parva, the tenth day of the program under Soreng Wildlife Range was observed at Hilley today with a mass plantation drive as the main event.
The day-long programme was led by Shri M.N. Sherpa, Hon'ble Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly cum MLA, Daramdin Constituency.
Hilley, which serves as the gateway to the famed Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary, was chosen for the plantation keeping in view its ecological significance. During the drive, various species of Rhododendron, the State Tree of Sikkim, were planted at different locations around Hilley.
The programme saw enthusiastic and active participation from the Panchayat President of Ribdi GPU, Smt Rinchen Doma Sherpa, Panchayat members, EDC Presidents and members of Ribdi EDC and Okhrey EDC, along with the Range Officer, Wildlife Soreng, Krishna P Dahal and staff of Soreng Wildlife Range.
The initiative is part of the State Government's fortnight long Paryavaran Parva, aimed at promoting environmental conservation, afforestation and community participation in protecting Sikkim's rich biodiversity.
The programme concluded with a call for collective responsibility towards conservation and to work towards a greener and cleaner Sikkim.
