To mark “A Day for Mother Earth,” a mass plantation drive was carried out simultaneously by thirteen re-constituted Eco-Development Committees (EDCs) of Soreng and Dentam Wildlife Ranges under the Wildlife Division Soreng/Gyalshing in their respective working areas today.
The newly re-constituted members of the EDCs actively participated in the plantation drive, planting saplings at various locations within their respective areas inside Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary . Nearly ten thousand seedlings of Rhododendron species, oak species and other fruit bearing species were planted during the day long program.
Earlier a meeting was chaired by the Divisional Forest Officer,Nisha Subba at Soreng and Dentam respectively with the executive members of re-constituted EDCs wherein detail planning on the execution of this plantation drive was discussed and prepared. During the meeting, it was collectively decided to select and prioritise fruit bearing species for carrying out the mass plantation drive inside the Sanctuary area.
The plantation drive which commenced today shall continue for a week across all EDC under Wildlife Division Soreng/Gyalshing namely Ribdi EDC, Upper Okhrey EDC, Sapreynagi EDC, Tareybhir EDC, Hattavan EDC, Dodak EDC, Buriakhop EDC, Singling EDC, Sribadam EDC, Hee-Patal EDC, Begha- Mangmoo EDC, Uttarey EDC and Bermiok Martam. The active participation and involvement of the EDCs in such plantation drives reflected collective commitment of the Wildlife Division and the community towards the conservation of nature and protection of the local environment while reducing human-wildlife conflict.
The programme also provided an opportunity for the new EDC members to begin their conservation activities through meaningful action at the grassroots level.
