Gangtok, June 25, 2026: As part of the ongoing initiative of the District Collector, Gangtok District, to conduct weekly inspections of Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) across the district, an inspection of Kopibari Syari Gram Panchayat Unit was carried out on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The inspection team was led by Shri Agawane Rohan Ramesh, IAS, District Collector, Gangtok District, and comprised Shri Sonam Wangyal Lepcha, Joint Director, DDMA, Gangtok District; Shri
. Bhutia, Block Development Officer (BDO), Nandok Block; Zilla Panchayat Members; and members of the Syaari Gram Panchayat Unit.
During the visit, the team inspected key educational and childcare infrastructure within the GPU to assess their condition in view of the ongoing monsoon season.
Dothapu Primary School, 20 Kopi Baari, Syaari Ward
At Dothapu Primary School, the inspection team observed roof seepage caused by the accumulation of rainwater on the terrace. It was also noted that the water tank area lacked an adequate protective retaining wall, posing a potential safety concern.
Lower Syaari East ICDS Centre, Maney Gaon, Ward No. 2
At the Lower Syaari East ICDS Centre, the team found roof leakages that had resulted in cracks in the plywood ceiling, along with structural cracks in the adjoining portions of the building.
Lower Syaari Secondary School, Ward No. 1
The inspection team also visited Lower Syaari Secondary School, where damaged cement flooring and seepage at multiple locations within the school building were observed.
Additionally, an old and unused primary school building situated above the secondary school was found to pose a potential safety risk, as students frequently use the adjoining playground. The structure was assessed to be vulnerable and in need of immediate dismantling.
The District Collector directed the School Management Committee (SMC) to initiate the immediate dismantling of the unsafe structure under the supervision of the BDO, Nandok, to prevent any untoward incident.
A debriefing session was subsequently held at the Kopi Baari Syaari Gram Panchayat Kendra, during which the District Collector emphasized the importance of disaster awareness and preparedness among Panchayat members and local residents. He stressed that strengthening community preparedness is essential for enhancing resilience and mitigating risks during natural calamities, particularly during the monsoon season.
