Immediate Response to Waterlogging, Landslide and Road Damage at Tintek Marchak, Rakdong-Tintek Block
Gangtok, 19 June 2026: Following the incessant rainfall on the evening of 18 June 2026, road widening works being undertaken by M/S Shivalik under GREF 87 RCC reportedly led to the blockage of culverts and drainage channels at Tintek Marchak under Rakdong-Tintek Block. As a result, runoff water flowed towards nearby residential areas, affecting several households and landed properties. No casualties have been reported.
Acting promptly on distress calls from local residents during the early hours of 19 June 2026, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Rabdang, Shri Suren Tamang, accompanied by the Block Development Officer, Rakdong-Tintek, Shri Pushkar Khatiwara, along with Disaster Management officials from the Sub-Division and concerned Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs), immediately visited the affected site to assess the situation.
During the inspection, it was observed that the blockage of culverts and drains had triggered a landslide and washed away a portion of the road, posing a threat to residential areas situated below the affected stretch. In response, machinery and manpower were promptly mobilised to clear the blocked culverts and drainage channels. The slide-prone areas were also covered with tarpaulins as a precautionary measure to prevent further soil erosion and landslides.
In view of the situation, the District Collector, Gangtok, exercising powers under Section 30 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, has issued directions for the immediate implementation of preventive measures. The order mandates that all culverts and drainage systems remain free from obstructions and that accumulated debris be removed to eliminate risks of landslides, flooding, and other associated hazards.
Further, GREF authorities have  been directed to undertake  and complete all necessary preventive measures on priority and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) to the Office of the Chairman-cum-District Collector, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok, latest by 26 June 2026.
The district administration continues to closely monitor the situation and remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected residents.
