Hon’ble Minister of State Shri Ajay Tamta Reviews Road Infrastructure and Development Projects in Sikkim Gangtok.
Hon’ble Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Ajay Tamta, visited the State of Sikkim and travelled through NH-10 and NH-510 to review the progress of various infrastructure and development initiatives being implemented in the region.
During the visit to Gyalshing District, the Hon’ble Minister inspected several ongoing projects and key public infrastructure facilities, including the Ayush Hospital and Krishi Vigyan Kendra. He also reviewed the implementation of various Central Government flagship schemes, including the Jal Jeevan Mission, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and assessed the progress of road and highway development projects in the district.
The Hon’ble Minister reviewed the status of several important highway development projects planned for the State, including:
Rhenock–Rongli Road Project: In-principle approval has been accorded for the development of a 15.30 km road stretch at an estimated Total Project Cost (TPC) of ₹595 crore.
NH-10 Improvement Works: Development and upgrading of a 25.75 km stretch with an estimated TPC of ₹1,018 crore.
Rangpo–Rorathang and Melli–Singtam Bypass Projects: Proposed bypasses and realignment works aimed at addressing traffic congestion, enhancing safety, and improving connectivity across key corridors.
The Hon’ble Minister directed the accelerated completion of ongoing and upcoming projects.
Achievements of NHIDCL in Sikkim:
NHIDCL has successfully completed six (06) projects in the State covering a total length of 58 km, with a cumulative investment of approximately ₹1,323 crore.
In addition, seven (07) projects are currently under various stages of implementation, covering a total length of 147 km with a combined TPC of ₹3,749 crore.
Road Development by the Ministry’s Road Wing:
The Ministry, through its Road and National Highways Wing, has also made significant contributions towards strengthening road connectivity in Sikkim:
Completed road projects covering 117 km with a total investment of ₹1,202 crore.
Ongoing construction works spanning 50 km with a TPC of ₹439 crore.
Upcoming projects covering 58 km with an estimated cost of ₹2,575 crore.
Hon’ble Minister also reviewed the progress of Gangtok Bypass and directed the officials to complete it by November 2026 at the latest.
Road Development by BRO:
The Ministry, through Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has also constructed 59 Km of road Gangtok – Sherathang - Nathu La (Jawaharlal Nehru Marg (NH 310) which is a strategic road connecting Nathula Border.
Hon’ble Minister also directed them to create lay-bys to enable parking of tourist vehicles and take adequate landslide mitigation measures.
In addition, seventeen (17) projects of National Highways are currently under various stages of implementation, across NH-310 and NH-310 AG covering a total length of 241 km by BRO.
Commitment Towards Sikkim’s Development:
Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister reiterated the Government of India's commitment to strengthening road infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across Sikkim. He emphasized that improved transportation networks are essential for promoting economic growth, facilitating trade and commerce, improving accessibility to remote areas, and unlocking the immense tourism potential of the State.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, through NHIDCL and its associated agencies, remains committed to providing safe, efficient, and resilient road infrastructure for the people of Sikkim, thereby contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the region.
