CIPMC Gangtok Organized Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Samdong Village to save our farm soil through IPM
Gangtok, 05 June 2026: The Central Integrated Pest Management Centre (CIPMC), Gangtok successfully organized a program on 04 June at Samdong under Rakdong-Tintek Block, District Gangtok, Sikkim, focusing on the promotion of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices in organic cultivation as a part of month long nation-wide Khet Bachao Abhiyan.
The programme witnessed active participation from approximately 90 farmers, progressive cultivators, and officials from the State Agriculture Department.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. A. Chakraborty, Deputy Director, CIPMC Gangtok, highlighted the importance of Integrated Pest Management in organic farming and emphasized the need for sustainable pest management practices to enhance agricultural productivity while protecting the environment. He also emphasised mandatory soil health cards for farmers to understand specific soil needs.
Dr. T. N. Deka, Scientist, ICRI, delivered a detailed presentation on insect pest and disease management in large cardamom and discussed practical approaches for minimizing crop losses.
Shri Roman Lepcha, Assistant Director, CIPMC Gangtok, explained seed treatment procedures, different categories of biopesticides, the use of pheromone traps, and the National Pest Surveillance System (NPSS).
A key feature of the programme was the hands-on field demonstration on seed treatment using biopesticides and the installation of pheromone traps, enabling farmers to gain practical knowledge of IPM techniques.
The programme concluded with an interactive session, where farmers discussed field-level challenges and received expert guidance on sustainable crop protection measures. Senior State Department Officers also attended programme and demonstration and gave their inputs.
