Gyalshing, 3 JUNE: The Department of Horticulture, Government of Sikkim,Gyalshing successfully conducted a Special project initiative under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) Scheme for the introduction and development of grafted avocado cultivation in Gyalshing which also falls under the PMDDKY framework. The training sessions will be initiated from 2nd June to 4th June.
The project aims to introduce high-yielding and climate-resilient grafted avocado varieties suited to the agro-climatic conditions of Sikkim. As part of the initiative, two scientifically selected varieties-Mexican Hass (Type A), a pollinator-dependent variety known for its rich flavour and market demand, and Ettinger (Type B), grown as a pollinator were distributed to carefully selected growers across five clusters- Gerethang, Martam, Thingling, Toyang, and Omchung.
Beneficiaries were identified on the basis of land suitability and their willingness to adopt innovative farming practices. Comprehensive training sessions were conducted for the selected growers, covering technical aspects of grafted avocado cultivation, including planting techniques, irrigation practices and canopy management.
The training programme was led by Shri Karma Sherpa, Additional Director, Horticulture deptt, and carried forward by Deputy Directors Ms. Penzomla Bhutia, Mr. Rinzing Wangyal Bhutia, and Mr. Suraj Chettri, along with Horticulture Inspector Mr. Phurba T. Bhutia and other Block-level officers and field staff, ensuring hands-on guidance and direct farmer engagement at the field level.
This initiative marks a significant step towards crop diversification and income enhancement for horticulture farmers in Gyalshing district, while also contributing to the broader vision of sustainable and climate adaptive agriculture in the State.
