“Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” launched at Mangley Village Namchi district, Sikkim, India

ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Sikkim Centre, conducted Farmer–Scientist Interaction Programme at Mangley Village of Namchi district under “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” (MGMG) peogramme. The farmer gathering was subjected to strengthen farmers’ knowledge on judicious use of organic fertilizers and plant nutrition management for promotion of climate-resilient sustainable organic farming.
Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head of Regional Centre (HoRC), greeted the gathering of 38 farmers. Dr. Saurav Saha, Senior Scientist (Agricultural Physics) highlighted the prospects of community farming, water resource management and conjunctive use bio-resources for practicing sustainable organic agriculture. Dr. Amit Kumar, Scientist (Agronomy), emphasized the importance of green manuring, crop rotation, and crop diversification for soil health management. He also conveyed the prospects of local seed bank creation and practicing natural farming to maintain soil fertility and crop productivity in low input hill agriculture. The farmers actively interacted with the scientists and discussed various issues related to winter water scarcity, quality input availability on real time basis, disease pest management challenges in practicing organic farming.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks to the Director ICAR NEH Umiam and an assurance of continued technical guidance and support to the farming community under the MGMG programme. Farmers’ field visits were conducted for crop health monitoring of standing maize crop and fall army warm management preceded by field demonstration on hand pollination technique in cucurbits viz. cucumber and bottle gourd to increase the net crop productivity and ensured better earning of small and marginal farmers of the region.
