Press Release
Press release from the office of Block Development Officer, BAC, Dzongu
Information & Public Relations Department
BAC, Dzongu (28/05/2026): In a powerful demonstration of community resolve, the Passingdang Saffo Gram Panchayat Unit in close collaboration with the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Dzongu successfully executed one of the most grueling and critical cleanliness drives the region has ever seen.
For nearly three decades, a lack of formal waste infrastructure left local residents with no choice but to dispose of daily refuse in jhoras, forest fringes, and steep cliffside areas. Over 20 to 30 years, an unnoticed cliffside just below the main road in Passingdang ward had quietly accumulated tons of historical plastic and solid waste.
Today, that cycle was broken. The breakthrough came via modern accountability: a newly introduced QR-based reporting system launched by the BAC Dzongu, which officially flagged the heavily littered, hard-to-reach cliff.
Responding to the call, an unprecedented coalition of volunteers stepped up, including: BAC; Gram Panchayats and GPK employees; Active and retired government officials; Local public and youth volunteers of Passingdang ward.
The operation was a grueling physical feat. Volunteers descended into the treacherous terrain, packed decades of compressed, garbage into bags, and used a system of ropes to manually haul the waste up the steep incline to the waiting transport vehicles.
This monumental effort aligns with the national Swachh Survekhan-Gramin 2026 under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin, serving as a textbook execution of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 at the absolute grassroot level. The initiative was driven by the vision and guidance of the Honorable Minister-cum-Area MLA, Shri Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, who has consistently championed transforming Dzongu into a pristine, sustainable sanctuary for its people.
