Press Release
Press Release from the Office of the Additional Political Secretary to HCM, Gangtok District
Information & Public Relations Department
Dated: 27/05/2026
On the request of the public of Ranipool ward, Shri Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, Additional Political Secretary to HCM, visited and inspected the fair weather road stretch measuring approximately 1.67 km from Andheri Bridge, above Orange Village Resort, to 4th Mile, Ruchal Gaon, Lower Samdur.
The inspection was carried out as per the direction and guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), who has consistently prioritised road connectivity and public welfare across the State. Following the 2024 elections, the Hon’ble Chief Minister has laid special emphasis on “BIPASA” — Bijuli, Pani and Sadak — as one of the key developmental agendas of the Government for ensuring better infrastructure and improved quality of life for the people.
During the site inspection, it was observed that the 1st phase of the all weather road construction, which commenced in February 2024 and was reportedly completed in February 2026, was not found to be satisfactory in terms of its present condition and the manner in which the work has been executed.
It may be recalled that the 2nd phase of the project titled “Widening and Upgradation of Link Road from NH-10 (Andheri Bridge) to Ranipool (PMGSY Road) via Samdur Village in Gangtok, Sikkim – 1.670 kms” was approved by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), on 30th January 2026.
Subsequently, the concerned department floated a Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) on 10th February 2026, inviting eligible Class II B contractors to participate in the bidding process. However, the tender process was temporarily halted due to certain issues within the Roads and Bridges Department.
During the site verification and interaction with departmental officials, the Additional Political Secretary was informed that the tender process is expected to resume shortly after resolving the technical glitches and departmental issues pertaining to the said project.
The proposed road project is expected to benefit nearly 2,500 residents of the area and will also serve as an important alternative connectivity route from Ranipool to Upper Samdur and 6th Mile, thereby improving transportation, accessibility and overall public convenience for the people of the region.
