Public Hearing Held at DAC Conference Hall, Sichey, on Road and Infrastructure Concerns of Rakdong Tintek
Gangtok, May 22: A public hearing concerning grievances and concerns arising from the ongoing backcutting and excavation works being undertaken by 87 RCC GREF in Rakdong Tintek area was held today at the Conference Hall of the District Administrative Centre (DAC), Sichey.
The meeting was chaired by the Hon’ble Area MLA of Tumin-Lingee Constituency in the presence of the Hon’ble Zilla Adakshya, District Collector, Gangtok, Additional District Collector (HQ), Gangtok, SDM Rabdang, Deputy Director (DM), Deputy Director, DC Office, BDO Rakdong Tintek, Panchayat members from various GPUs, officials from GREF/BRO, representatives of Shivalik Company and members of the public from the affected areas.
During the hearing, residents highlighted several hardships caused due to the excavation and road construction activities. The concerns raised included poor road conditions, unsafe and damaged pathways affecting school-going students, loss of livelihood for local businesses, lack of compensation for damage to private properties, and the need for reconstruction of waiting sheds and other public infrastructure.
SDM Rabdang presented the grievances and elaborated on the various issues before the District Collector, Gangtok, for necessary intervention and redressal.
Expressing serious concern over the issues raised by the public, the Hon’ble Area MLA stressed the urgent need for the concerned company and GREF authorities to undertake immediate remedial measures in all affected areas. The Hon’ble MLA also directed the concerned survey officials to carry out their duties responsibly and ensure proper assessment of damages and grievances.
Addressing the gathering, the District Collector, Gangtok, advised residents to maintain timestamped photographs and videos of their houses and properties for future reference and verification in the event of any damages caused during the course of the ongoing works.
During the meeting, the District Collector issued the following directions:
• Regular reassessment of affected areas shall commence from next week onwards.
• A single point of contact through GREF shall be maintained for all matters related to the ongoing site work.
• GREF shall submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) along with quality checking reports to the District Administration.
• Temporary restoration and mitigation measures shall be undertaken immediately to ensure roads remain motorable for commuters and local residents throughout the monsoon season.
The District Administration assured the public that all grievances and concerns would be addressed in a time-bound manner through coordinated efforts among the concerned departments and agencies.
