SPCB-Sikkim Conducted Awareness and Training Programme on Ban on Single-Use Plastics at Mangan
Mangan, 14 May 2026: The State Pollution Control Board-Sikkim (SPCB-Sikkim) conducted a Public Awareness and Sensitization Programme on the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUP), along with training on the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, subsequent amendments, and the Online Reporting Mechanism at Ringhim Nampatam GPU, Mangan, on 14 May 2026.
The programme was graced by Zilla Adhakshya Mr. Kado Lepcha and attended by around 75 participants, including officials from the Rural Development Department, Panchayati Raj Institutions, SPCB-Sikkim, ICDS, ASHA, and members of the business community. DPO Mangan, Mr. Karma Thendup Bhutia, welcomed the participants and encouraged collective efforts towards effective implementation of the SUP ban.
During the technical sessions, Mr. Reshap Sharma, Field Assistant, SPCB-Sikkim, explained the prohibited SUP items noƟfied under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, and highlighted the provisions of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging waste under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and subsequent amendments. Mr. Pravash Chettri demonstrated the online portals developed by the Central Pollution Control Board
(CPCB), including the Plastic Waste Management portal, SUP inspection modules, and the public grievance mobile application for reporting illegal sale and use of banned SUP items.
Participants were also briefed on plastic waste assessment and characterization methodologies developed by CPCB for Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats, including the preparation and submission of Annual Reports through the online portal to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
The programme included an interactive session and practical training on identification, segregation, characterization, and assessment of plastic waste. Resource persons emphasized accurate data collection, scientific waste management practices, and collective public participation in achieving an SUP-Free Sikkim.
