Date: 12-May-2026
Gangtok, May 12: A meeting was convened at  Tashiling Secretariat today in the presence of Hon’ble Minister cum MLA Lachen Mangan Shri Samdup Lepcha, and was attended by Chief Secretary Shri R. Telang, the Pipons of Lachen, executives of the Lachen Dzumsa, the Tsutimpa of Lachen Monastery, and local residents of Lachen.
During the meeting, the local residents expressed serious concern over the disruption in connectivity caused by the delay in the restoration of the steel footbridge at Taramchu. They urged the early completion of the bridge to facilitate the smooth movement of residents and the uninterrupted delivery of essential services. The restoration work is presently being undertaken by the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF).
It was informed during the meeting that the existing footbridge had been installed by the Indian Army and would be taken back by the Army authorities. In this regard, the local residents proposed to construct a replacement bridge on their own and assured that they would assume full responsibility for the execution of the work.
The residents also proposed the construction of a 180-metre tunnel as a long-term and permanent solution to address the recurring connectivity challenges in the area.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Minister cum Area MLA Shri Samdup Lepcha urged that a joint meeting involving representatives of Kundan Company, the Chief Engineer of GREF, the Lachen Dzumsa, and the District Collector of Mangan District be convened to discuss and expedite the implementation of the proposed measures.
Chief Secretary Shri R. Telang informed that the grievance has already been brought to the notice of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), and that a meeting on the matter would be convened shortly. He further stated that a formal proposal from the Roads and Bridges Department incorporating the concerns and requirements discussed during the meeting should be submitted to the Government for necessary consideration and action.
