Lum Gor Sangtok Panchayat President Mobilises Multi-Agency Cleanliness Drive at Dzongu’s Gateway-Phidang.
Dzongu, deeply rooted in its rich culture, vibrant traditions, and profound heritage, has wholeheartedly embraced the Swachhata (cleanliness) initiative, earning commendation from the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, for Sikkim's exemplary commitment. Following the much-anticipated launch of Dzongu's first-ever Plastic Waste Management Unit (PWMU) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin, the Rural Development Department has successfully implemented a systematic waste collection program. This initiative, spanning across the seven Gram Panchayat Units (GPUs) under the Passingdang Block Administrative Centre (BAC), is efficiently serviced by their dedicated Resource Recovery Van (RRV). The Passingdang BAC has truly championed the principles of zero plastic and zero waste, operating in a mission-driven mode to transform local environmental practices.
Today marked a significant milestone in this ongoing effort. The Sangtok ward, falling under the Lum Gor Sangtok GPU, spearheaded a massive cleanliness drive in Phidang, a crucial entry point to Dzongu. This impactful event was led by the Honourable Panchayat President, who successfully mobilized a wide array of participants: the Panchayats, BRO, Phidang Police Out Post, Phidang Forest Department, Anganwadi Workers, and enthusiastic local residents. Phidang, a site bustling with numerous developmental projects and still grappling with the flooded aftermath of the 2023 GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood), has unfortunately accumulated a substantial volume of plastic and other waste over time. The drive meticulously focused on clearing Phidang and its peripheral areas, including roads, streams, and especially the river banks. All the collected waste was then efficiently transported to the state-of-the-art PWMU situated at the Passingdang BAC for proper processing and management.
