With the continued encouragement and support of Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, and Shri Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, Hon’ble Minister for Forest and Environment, Mines and Geology, and Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, the Geographical Indication (GI) Consultative Group Meeting (CGM) regarding the registration of various indigenous products of Sikkim was successfully organised on 7th and 8th May 2026 at Tashiling Secretariat, Gangtok.
The meeting was convened as part of the hearing process for GI applications filed from the State of Sikkim. The proceedings were conducted by the Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Government of India. Prof. (Dr.) Unnat Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, Registrar of Copyrights and Geographical Indications, Government of India, joined the meeting virtually.
Officials from the Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai and Delhi, who attended the meeting in person, included:
* Shri M. Mohammad Habibulla, Deputy Registrar of Trade Marks and Geographical Indications, Chennai
* Dr. S. Sivakumar, Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks and Geographical Indications, Chennai
* Shri Abhishek Rai, Assistant Registrar of Trade Marks and Geographical Indications, Delhi
The Consultative Group Meeting witnessed active participation from experts, officials, and stakeholders associated with Geographical Indications and Intellectual Property Rights, creating a meaningful platform for discussion and exchange of ideas.
The programme was organised by the Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, which functions as the nodal department for matters related to Intellectual Property Rights in the State vide Gazette Notification No. 130 of the Government of Sikkim.
The meeting concluded successfully and is expected to further strengthen the process of GI registration and the preservation and recognition of Sikkim’s rich traditional and indigenous heritage.
