Soreng, April 6: As per the mission and vision of HCM Shri Prem Singh Tamang, CEO District Education Office Soreng initiated a pilot project beginning with PM SHRI, CMS SHRI AND GOVERNOR SHRI schools and all the JHS under Soreng District.
Today, a meeting  and interactive  session was held at PM SHRI Soreng SSS with the HOIs and all the teachers teaching English of all the above-mentioned schools on the topic METHODS FOR IMPROVING ENGLISH IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.
The programme was attended by CEO Mr T. D. Bhutia, JD Mr M K Khewa , Deputy Director Mr IK Rai, AD's Mrs Sushma Mohra, Mr Roshan Pradhan, Mr Govind Pradhan, AEOs Mr Gowin Dhakal, Anil Sharma and Lalit Subba , Mr Subash Gurung, and Coordinator DEO Soreng.
The programme started with a welcome note by JD Mr M K Khewa, Context Setting was done by Mr Roshan Pradhan, AD, Baiguney. In his address, he highlighted the following points:
1.Exposure to the English language should be wholeheartedly supported by all the HOIs and teachers.
2. No translation to be done while teaching English, even in the Primary classes.
3.All schools to appoint a Nodal Teacher to monitor the successful implementation of English speaking.
4.Counselling of all the teachers to ensure they achieve job satisfaction so that they can give their best to the students.
Experience sharing and suggestions:
1. Mr DM Pradhan, Principal PM SHRI SRBG SSS,Kaluk-
He suggested that, firstly, it is very important to appreciate English as an important language by all the teachers.
He suggested that the department should appoint officers specifically as the head of the English Department.
Appointment of subject-specific teachers at primary and elementary levels.
Grammar-specific training to be imparted to the teachers.
  1. Mr Satish Rai ,HM Chumbong Budang JHS -He started his note with his experience that he has made English compulsory for the past three years for all the teaching and non teaching staff and students of all levels and has experienced positive changes in the school.
  2. Mr Dhan Kumar Gurung, HM Ramidham PS -His note started with the suggestions to HOIs related to the enrolment drive . He stressed the fact that speaking English on campus and in classrooms should be made compulsory.
He appreciated the Language and Literacy Programme being conducted by SCERT.
The Holistic Progress Card also helps in all round development of the students and activities will definitely help to improve English.
He also urged the HOIs to focus on Learning Outcomes and achieve MLL.
He shared his experience of preparing an activity calendar.
He also shared the positive aspects of subject-specific classrooms.
CEO  Mr T D Bhutia made a power point presentations highlighting the following important points.
1.Objectives of Improving English :
Improve English speaking skills.
Develop reading and writing skills.
Increase confidence
Monitor progress through regular monitoring.
Provide individual support through the mentor programme.
2.Activities:
Pick and speak(Using paper and topics.
Showing educational movies
Reading Practices
Taking part in plays and dramas.
Morning assembly activities (For all the classes)
Thought for the day on Blackboard.
The concerned teachers are to submit progress reports to HOI's on a regular basis, which will be later forwarded to the District Office.
3.Mentor Programme:
Should be introduced where a teacher is assigned a group of students who will be monitored over the progress of the students, including progress of English speaking and learning , academic performance, attendance, etc.
The expected outcomes of all these initiatives are as follows:
Better English speaking skills
Improved reading and writing skills
Increased confidence in students
Better academic performance
Strong communication skills
Proper monitoring and guidance system.
Keynote address-Dr P B Chettri , Principal PM SHRI Soreng SSS.
In his address, he focused on the following important points.
1.Four skills of Language
2. Activity-based Learning
3.Reading Culture
4.Assessment Reforms.
He suggested many activities to be conducted in school on his experience which he has been implementing regularly in his school.
He also stressed on the fact that teachers plays an important role in shaping the future of the students and  should give their best as teachers .
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Govind Dhakal, who was also the MC of the programme.
