Namchi, 6 April: An awareness programme on the Swachhata Green Leaf Rating (SGLR) System was successfully organised by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Yangang, in collaboration with the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Yangang and the Yangang Tourism Development Committee (YTDC).
The primary objective of the programme was to promote hygiene, sanitation, and sustainable practices among hotels, homestays, and restaurants in the region. Participants were sensitised on key aspects required to obtain the Swachhata Green Leaf Rating, including effective waste management, reduction of plastic usage, and proper grey water management. It was emphasised that the Green Leaf Rating certification would be awarded based on the extent to which service providers adopt and implement these eco-friendly practices.
The second half of the programme featured an insightful session by Shri Milan Sharma, who shared his inspiring journey from Singapore to becoming a successful homestay owner. He also provided valuable suggestions on improving hospitality services and building a strong tourism portfolio in the region.
Hon’ble Advisor, Food Processing Department, Shri CL Gurung, highlighted the core objectives of YTDC and elaborated on future initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure and opportunities in Yangang. OSD to HCM, Shri Karma Subba, stressed the need for Yangang to enhance its efforts in positioning itself as a premium tourism destination.
Hon’ble MLA, Smt Raj Kumari Thapa, in her address, encouraged the youth to take responsibility and actively participate in the development of Yangang as a leading tourism hub. She applauded tourism entrepreneurs such as Shri Milan Sharma and Shri Mandeep Pradhan for their exemplary contributions in promoting tourism in the area. She further emphasised the wide-ranging benefits of tourism for local communities and livelihoods.
An interactive question-and-answer session was also held, where participants actively engaged with the speakers and had their queries addressed.
The programme witnessed the presence of Hon’ble MLA Smt Raj Kumari Thapa, Hon’ble Advisor Shri CL Gurung, OSD to HCM Shri Karma Subba, OSD Agriculture Shri SB Rai, SDM Yangang, BDO Yangang, Social Media Coordinator to Hon’ble Party President Shri Milan Basnet, Vice President, YTDC Smt. Sonica Lepcha, General Secretary, YTDC, Shri Richen Dorjee Bhutia, Treasurer, Shri DK Rai, Assistant Treasurer, Shri Yurba S Limboo, Advisor, Shri Durga P Basnet, along with Hon’ble Zilla Panchayat members, Panchayat representatives, officials from various departments, and hotel and homestay owners from Yangang and surrounding areas.
The programme concluded with a collective commitment to adopt sustainable tourism practices and work towards achieving the Swachhata Green Leaf Rating, thereby enhancing Yangang’s potential as a clean, green, and premium tourism destination.
