A 4-Day Residential Training for GTs & PGTs at TRI, Assam Lingzey w.e.f 2-5 April 2026.
Gangtok, 2nd April 2026: The inaugural programme of a four-day residential training for Graduate Teachers (GTs) and Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) was held on 2nd April 2026 at the Tribal Research Institute and Training Centre TRI& TC, Assam Lingzey. The programme was organised by the Social Welfare Department (SWD) in collaboration with the Education Department.
The event was graced by the presence of Hon’ble MLA, Maneybung-Dentam, Shri Sudesh Subba, along with senior officers from SWD, Director of the Language Education Department, Senior Text Book Officers (TBOs), TBOs, ATBOs , resource persons from SCERT and DIET, and 100 participating teachers. The training aims not only to enhance teaching competencies but also to empower teachers as custodians of cultural preservation and promoters of indigenous languages.
At the outset, Joint Secretary, SWD, Ms. Kabita Subba welcomed the dignitaries and participants, which was followed by a keynote address by Special Secretary, Ms. Bandana Chettri, who set the tone of the programme by outlining the background and objectives of the training. She encouraged participants to actively engage, learn collaboratively, and take on the responsibility of transmitting cultural heritage and deep-rooted identity to future generations. Emphasising the need to balance progress with tradition, she stated that while it is important to move forward with changing times, it is equally vital to preserve the identity and culture that define us.
She also briefed on the 1st phase of training, which was conducted for 150 primary language teachers in the month of Oct 2025. Building on that foundation, this second phase of training is focussed on 100 Graduate and Post Graduate teachers.
Director of Language, Education Department, Shri A.D. Chettri, urged the teachers to take the opportunity seriously and act as torchbearers in preserving and promoting local knowledge and languages. He expressed gratitude to the Social Welfare Department for the initiative and assured continued collaboration with shared commitment and dedication.
In his address, Hon’ble MLA Shri Sudesh Subba highlighted the importance of safeguarding the State’s rich cultural heritage to prevent any identity crisis in the future. He spoke about the State Government’s initiative of observing Traditional Attire Day once a week as a meaningful step towards conserving customs and traditions. He called upon teachers to recognise the significance of their noble role and to actively contribute towards preserving indigenous knowledge and local languages, many of which are at risk of fading away.
The four-day training programme is expected to serve as a platform for capacity building, knowledge exchange, and strengthening efforts towards cultural and linguistic preservation in the State.
