SICUN CELEBRATES ITS 24th FOUNDATION DAY
Pakyong, April 2: The Sikkim State Cooperative Union (SICUN) celebrated its 24th Foundation Day on 2nd April, 2026 at the Training Hall of SICUN. The Foundation Day was graced by the Chief Guest, Shri B. B. Chettri, Hon’ble Chairman of Panchayati Raj, Government of Sikkim.
The other invitees present were the Zilla Panchayat, Assam Lingzey GPU, Ms. Suman Rai, Panchayat President, Mrs. Sita Sharma and the Panchayat members, Additional Registrar, Cooperation Department, Shri Pemba Tshering Lepcha, Teachers, Assam Lingzey Senior Secondary School, and the Board of Directors of Assam Lingzey MPCS. The organizers present were Chief Executive Officer, SICUN, Shri Phadung Bhutia, Executive Officer, Smt. Indira Sharma, officials and staff of SICUN and the core attendees of the programme were the students of Assam Lingzey Senior Secondary School.
The Foundation Day commenced with the awareness programme on cooperatives given to the students by Cooperative Development Officer, SICUN, Shri Jitman Rai. In the programme, he explained to the students the basic values and principles of cooperatives, the history of cooperatives in India and Sikkim. He also briefed them about the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies, their functions and how the society benefits the public and the community. Moreover, it was a basic awareness session.
The programme was followed by the cake-cutting ceremony, which was attended by the Chief Guest of the day. Subsequently, Shri Phadung Bhutia, in his keynote address, thanked the Chief Guest for his charming presence and applauded everyone present in the celebration. He enlightened everyone about how SICUN was established in the year 2002, he also recalled about his journey with SICUN since the time he was associated with SICUN (since Ranipool days) and how the time flew till date. He said that he felt honored and fortunate to have been a part of SICUN and to have witnessed its 24th Foundation Day. Later, he also missed the presence of Hon’ble Chairman of SICUN, Dr. Mangal Jit Rai, on this auspicious occasion of 24th Foundation Day, as he has been out of station at present.
The most important activity of the celebration was the Quiz Competition held among the students of the Assam Lingzey SSS. The Quiz competition was conducted by the Quiz masters of the day, Shri Tormal Sharma, ACI, assisted by Thupden Nima Lepcha, ACI. The winners of the competition were awarded certificates and attractive prizes by the Chief Guest.
Eventually, Shri B. B. Chettri on his address firstly congratulated the SICUN family on the 24th Foundation Day. He praised the team of SICUN for its continuous dedication towards their effort in promoting leadership and management development in all sectors.
He was enlightened to know that SICUN had trained more than 1500 trainees over the last 24 years. The rising generation will look forward more to SICUN because of its achievement through the past. He also instructed students to take full advantage of the services of SICUN and to get more engaged towards the cooperative sector.
The Foundation Day concluded on a positive note with the expression of gratitude conveyed by Executive Officer, SICUN, Smt. Indira Sharma.
