The Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited successfully organized an awareness and training programme on Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) on 19th March 2026 at NHPC Hall, Middle Kambal, aimed at promoting clean milk production, scientific dairy farming, and strengthening cooperative institutions.
The program was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including Shri Pushkar Khatiwara, Block Development Officer, as the chief guest; Dr. T. B. Ghatani, Managing Director, Sikkim Milk Union; Dr. Diki Sherpa, Additional Director (AH&VS); Dr. Tshering Gyalpo Bhutia, Manager (Procurement & Input); Dr. Tshering Zangmu Bhutia, Veterinary Officer; Shri Ranjan Bhattarai, Cooperative Inspector; Ward Panchayat members of Samdong Kambal and Dhanbari GPUs, among others.
Farmers were sensitised on scientific dairy practices, including balanced cattle nutrition, advising farmers to avoid not cooking cattle feed (kholay) as it reduces essential nutrients, hygienic milking practices, clean milk handling, use of stainless steel utensils, and proper storage.
Emphasis was also laid on livestock insurance, regular vaccination against diseases such as LSD and FMD, deworming, and maintaining consistent milking schedules.
Addressing the gathering, the Managing Director highlighted the achievements of 24 Milk Producers’ Cooperative Societies of the Rakdong–Tintek belt, which collectively supplied 7.44 lakh litres of milk during 2024–25, benefitting over 700 farmers and receiving approximately ₹59.56 lakh as incentive. He further stated that the Union distributed nearly ₹120 crore to dairy farmers in the previous year, reflecting its strong contribution to rural livelihoods.
He also emphasized fodder development initiatives, including promotion of fodder nurseries, hay and silage making, and supply of feed resources to remote societies. Stress was laid on maintaining milk quality, adoption of scientific practices, and strengthening cooperative transparency.
The Block Development Officer appreciated the efforts of dairy farmers and their role in strengthening the rural economy.
Outstanding Milk Producers’ Cooperative Societies and individuals were felicitated. Shri Mohan Neopaney, Livestock Assistant, was honoured for his dedicated service, while Middle Kamble MPCS and Ajambari Women MPCS were recognised for their performance. Tokens of chaff cutters were distributed to farmers, and geysers were provided to selected societies to support hygienic milk handling.
DCS STAFF TRAINING PROGRAM (24th–26th March 2026)
Sikkim Milk Union also organized a three-day training program for Secretaries of Dairy Cooperative Societies at its Conference Hall, with resource persons from the Department of Cooperation, banking institutions, SISCO, and Sikkim Milk Union officials.
On 24th March, the program was inaugurated by Dr. T. B. Ghatani, Managing Director, who emphasised quality improvement, mandatory registration of DCS and consequences of non-registration, promotion of the Gwala App among farmers through Secretaries and Route Supervisors for enhanced transparency, optimal utilisation of cooling facilities, and strengthening of evening milk collection systems.
On 25th March, the Managing Director welcomed Shri Mangal Jit Rai, Hon’ble Chairman, SICUN, as the Chief Guest and reiterated the importance of quality milk production, cooperative discipline, and digital transparency. The Chief Guest highlighted the significance of cooperative governance, the benefits of proper registration, and the need for maintaining quality standards in milk production.
The training covered key areas, including the functioning of AMCUs, digital applications, audit and registration procedures, financial schemes such as KCC-AH and PMEGP, and the importance of conducting Annual General Meetings (AGMs) for effective cooperative governance.
