VALEDICTORY PROGRAMME OF GREEN SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME 2025-26 ON “MICRO-ENTREPRENEUR – BAMBOO CRAFTS”
Gyalshing, March 25, 2026: The Forest and Environment Department, through its Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Hub, proudly marked the successful completion of the two-month Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) 2025-26 on "Micro-Entrepreneur (Bamboo Crafts)" participated by 20 ST candidates of Gyalshing District, during a vibrant valedictory ceremony held at Bermiok Martam,today. This initiative, certified by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and aligned with Level 4 of the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural communities by imparting essential skills in bamboo products and handicrafts.
The event was graced by Ms Dhan Maya Chettri, Zilla Panchayat, Hee Pechrek-Martam Territorial Constituency(TC)as the Chief guest, alongside Mr Sagar Sharma, Zilla Member of Gyalshing-Omchung TC, Ms Sabitri Rai, Zilla Member of Melli-Rimbi TC, Panchayat Upper Bermiok and Mr Ganesh Sharma, Panchayat President of Gyalshing-Bermiok constituency as the guest of honour.
The occasion also had the presence of distinguished guests, including Panchayat Members, Forest officers from Gyalshing District. Esteemed resource persons from the Himalayan Science Society and the Bermiok Skill Development Centre, Dr Tika Prasad Sharma, Mr Rupam Kalita, Mr Phursang Lepcha and Mr Nim Pintso Bhutia also attended the event along with various other officials and staff of the Forest and Environment Department, participants, and members of the public.
Ms Dhan Maya Chettri, in her address, extended best wishes to the trainees and encouraged them to leverage the green skills they acquired to enhance their income and promote the rural economy. She reiterated that the Green Skill Development Programme reflects the vision of a sustainable, prosperous, and empowered Sikkim (Sunawlo, Samridh ani Samarth Sikkim) as envisaged by the Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay).
Mr Ganesh Sharma congratulated the participants for successfully completing the comprehensive training course in bamboo crafts and urged them to utilise their new skills with the continued support of the nearby skill development centre.
Ms Kusum Gurung, Additional Director of Forest, highlighted the significance of green skills in preserving and restoring environmental quality for a sustainable future. She mentioned that the GSDP has been implemented by the Sikkim EIACP Hub, Forest and Environment Department, since 2019 under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India, in line with the Skill India Mission, to develop green skilled workers by amalgamating scientific and traditional approaches for the sustainable development of the rural economy.
The GSDP course on "Bamboo Crafts," which commenced on the 27th of January 2026, provided comprehensive hands-on training in bamboo crafts, product making, and finishing. Over the course of about 60 days, 20 local youth and farmers from the ST community successfully completed the training sessions held at Bermiok Skill Development Centre. Each trainee has been equipped with the necessary tools and skills for product making and finishing. They will also receive extended support from subject experts of the Bamboo Training-cum-Skill Development Centre at Bermiok Martam for a period of one year to aid their entrepreneurship ventures. Since 2019, a total of 160 candidates in 8 batches have successfully enrolled as Micro-Entrepreneurs in Bamboo Crafts, with their products being marketed through the GSDP outlet at the Forest Office premises in Deorali, Gangtok.
The valedictory event featured a video montage of the training, feedback from resource persons and trainees, and the distribution of course completion certificates and token of appreciation by the Chief guest and other dignitares.
