On 18th March 2026, the State Pollution Control Board-Sikkim organized Sensitization and Training Programme on the ban on Single-Use-Plastic (SUP) under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, including subsequent amendments at Singtam Nagar Panchayat Community Hall.
The programme was attended by a total 33 participants, which included officials from Urban Development Department, Singtam Nagar Panchayat and SPCB Sikkim.
The training programme began with a presentation by Mr. Pravash Chettri , JE, SPCB, on prohibited SUPs items , notified under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 via G.S.R. 571(E) dated August 12, 2021, which prohibits the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of identified SUP items effective from July 1, 2022. He also highlighted the environmental hazards of SUPs, the need for collective action, functioning of online portals for plastic waste management developed by CPCB, SUP inspections drive related online modules, public grievance mobile app for reporting illegal sale and use of banned SUPs in rural and urban areas by general public.
Thereafter, the second phase of the programme began with presentation by Mr. Reshap Sharma, FA, SPCB, regarding Assessment and Characterization of plastic waste. The CPCB has developed a methodology for carrying out the Plastic Waste Assessment and Characterization with an objective to quantify the types of plastic waste generated/collected and disposed by the ULBs. This is mainly to ascertain effectiveness of the ban on prohibited SUPs items. The ULBs are required to prepare an annual report based on the data generated during Plastic waste characterization/quantification and submit the annual report through the online portal to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
This initiative is mainly towards strengthening our commitment for environmental protection and to achieve a plastic-free Sikkim.
