Sikkim Participates in National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries at Srinagar
Ms. Roshni Rai, Secretary, Fisheries Department, and Dr. Karma Doma Bhutia, Additional Director, participated in the National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries held on 14th March 2026 at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Srinagar, Kashmir.
The conference was graced by the august presence of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, Hon’ble Union Minister of Fisheries Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Hon’ble Minister of State S. P. Singh Baghel, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture Production Javed Ahmad Mir, and Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Abhilaksh Likhi, along with other senior officials from the Government of India and various state governments.
The conference brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening cold water fisheries across regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Meghalaya.
During the conference, deliberations were held on themes such as advancing cold water aquaculture through modern systems and climate-resilient technologies, fish health, nutrition, biosecurity, and sustainable cold water fish production. Strategies for institutional synergy between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research institutes and the Fisheries Departments for the growth of the cold water fisheries sector were also discussed.
Experts further deliberated on value addition, post-harvest infrastructure development, domestic market expansion and export potential, entrepreneurship development in cold water fisheries for livelihood enhancement, capacity building, and upscaling the skills of farmers through training programmes. The role of cooperatives, Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs), and Self Help Groups (SHGs) in promoting sustainable fishery development in the Himalayan region was also highlighted.
The programme was attended by fish farmers from various districts of Jammu, who interacted with experts on issues such as fish diseases, availability of quality seed and feed, and opportunities for public–private partnerships.
The programme concluded with remarks by the Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Government of India, emphasising the importance of sustainable management and scientific advancement of cold water fisheries for strengthening rural livelihoods in mountainous regions.
