On 13th March 2026, the Urban Development Department (UDD), Soreng, conducted by Bazaar Officer Mrs. Mary Gold Lucksom, a comprehensive field inspection of Soreng Bazaar and its surrounding areas was carried out.
The inspection was carried out jointly in collaboration with the Panchayat President of 21 GPU, Soreng District, along with officials and staff from the Food and Civil Supplies Department, Rural Development Department, and the Labour Department, Government of Sikkim.
The primary objective of this joint inspection was to ensure compliance with departmental regulations, assess the delivery of public services, and monitor the overall development and regulatory functioning within the township area.
The Bazaar Officer UDD/Soreng expressed sincere appreciation to all the concerned departments for their cooperation and prompt response, which contributed to the successful conduct of the joint inspection.
During the inspection, the following actions were taken:
Two non-standard weighing machines were seized from two jewellery shops.
A counter machine was replaced and directed to be used strictly in accordance with Government/Departmental guidelines.
All restaurant owners were advised that the use of the word “Bar” is not permitted in their establishments. Shop owners were instructed to display narcotics prohibition boards in accordance with Government and departmental guidelines.
Sweet shop owners were strictly warned to ensure proper display of price tags on their products. Vendors and food establishments were directed to comply with proper sealing and packaging standards for food items.
The inspection reinforced the commitment of the concerned departments towards maintaining regulatory standards, ensuring consumer protection, and promoting orderly development within the Soreng township area.
