Krishi Vigyan Kendra South Sikkim Conducts Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting 2026.
Namchi, 13 March: The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) Meeting 2026 of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) South Sikkim was successfully conducted at the Conference Hall of KVK, Namthang. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Joint Director-cum-Head, ICAR Sikkim Centre, Tadong. Dr. M. Thoithoi Devi, Scientist and Nodal Officer of KVK from ATARI Zone VI, Guwahati, joined the meeting through virtual mode. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Nation Chamling, Deputy Director-cum-Deputy Project Director, ATMA, Department of Agriculture, Namchi District, along with officials from various line departments and progressive farmers of the district.
At the outset, Shri Indra Prasad Shivakoti, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK South Sikkim, welcomed the members and presented an overview of the activities and achievements of the Kendra. The Annual Progress Report for the year 2025–26 and the Annual Action Plan for 2026–27 were presented by the Subject Matter Specialists of the KVK. Presentations were delivered by Dr. Pravesh Shivakoty (Plant Protection), Yangchenla Bhutia (Horticulture), Ambika Sharma (Agronomy), Basant Tamang (Soil Science) and Karma Peden Kaleon (Agricultural Extension), highlighting the ongoing programmes, demonstrations, trainings and future strategies for technology dissemination among farmers.
While addressing the gathering, Dr. Ashok Kumar, Chairman of the SAC, emphasized the promotion of open-pollinated and composite crop varieties, considering the organic farming status of the state. He also highlighted several technologies developed by the ICAR Sikkim Centre, which could be further disseminated through KVK for the benefit of farmers. He appreciated the efforts of KVK South Sikkim in effectively transferring agricultural technologies to the farming community. Dr. Nation Chamling highlighted the importance of strengthening convergence between ATMA and KVK in implementing extension activities and supporting farmers in the coming agricultural seasons.
Field visit to the KVK facilities, including the Soil Testing Laboratory, Mushroom Spawn Production Unit and various demonstration units established at Krishi Vigyan Kendra South Sikkim.
The SAC meeting provided an important platform for discussion, review and planning of extension programmes aimed at improving agricultural productivity and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods in the district.
