Building Student Leadership in School Sanitation at PM SHRI Schools in Namchi and Namthang under Project Aagaz 3.0.
Namchi, 13 March : Training workshops on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) were successfully conducted at PM SHRI Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Namchi and Government Senior Secondary School, Perbing under Project Aagaz 3.0. The initiative is powered by the Education Department, Govt of Sikkim and Sulabh Sanitation Club with the support of Alkem Foundation, aiming to strengthen hygiene awareness and sanitation leadership among school students.
The workshops adopted a participatory and activity-based learning approach, where students were trained on various aspects of hygiene through interactive games, role plays, demonstrations, quizzes, and group exercises. Key themes included handwashing techniques, menstrual hygiene management, waste segregation, personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and the importance of safe water practices.
Students enthusiastically participated in handwashing drills, hygiene relay games, and group discussions on maintaining clean classrooms and toilets. Through practical demonstrations, they learned the correct six-step handwashing technique, the importance of regular nail trimming, oral hygiene, and the need for proper disposal of sanitary waste.
Anjal, a student from Namchi, shared, “I learned that hygiene is not just about keeping ourselves clean, but also about keeping our surroundings clean. The games made it very easy to understand.”
Another student, Ashmita from Perbing, expressed, “We never realised that improper waste segregation can affect the whole school environment. Now we want to monitor our classrooms in rotation.”
Ms. Bandana Rai, Principal ,PM Shri GGSSS Namchi, remarked, “This workshop has empowered both students and teachers. The activity-based model kept the students engaged throughout. We now feel equipped to guide them in forming active sanitation clubs within the school.”
Participants also received hygiene kits and IEC materials, including posters and pamphlets, to reinforce key messages beyond the training sessions. The initiative aims to create long-term behavioural change by transforming students into hygiene champions who will carry these practices into their homes and communities. A similar WASH training workshop was also conducted at Government Senior Secondary School, Perbing, where students actively participated and responded with great enthusiasm. The programme was widely appreciated by the school community for its practical approach and engaging methodology.
Project Aagaz 3.0 continues to strengthen the WASH ecosystem in schools across Sikkim, fostering a culture of cleanliness, dignity, and health through informed action and student leadership.
