Encouraging Ownership and Sustainability in School WASH Facilities- Students Take Charge to Promote Hygiene and Sanitation in Schools
Pakyong, March 13: A training programme on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) was conducted at PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Rhenock; Government Senior Secondary School, Assam Lingzey; and PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Rangpo in Pakyong district.
The initiative, undertaken by the Alkem Foundation in collaboration with the Sulabh Sanitation Club, and in association with the Education Department of Sikkim, aims to strengthen WASH infrastructure and promote hygiene practices among students. Thirteen government schools in the state have been adopted under the programme.
The initiative focuses on refurbishing handwashing facilities, improving mid-day meal areas, renovating girls’ toilets and distributing hygiene kits to students. Teachers and students will also undergo training on hygiene practices, while School WASH Clubs will be formed to promote peer learning and behavioural change.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr Samir Kumar, while the sessions were facilitated by Mr Rupak Roy Choudhury and Ms Samikshya Das Mohapatra from Sulabh International, New Delhi.
During the programme, students participated in role-plays, demonstration sessions, poster-making competitions and question-box activities. Demonstrations on handwashing steps and the use of hygiene kits were also conducted.
Principal, PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Rhenock, Mr Paul Lepcha highlighted that the Sanitation Club can play a role in promoting WASH education in the school through co-curricular activities and student participation.
Teachers and students of GSSS, Rhenock shared their views on maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in school campuses. They discussed the role of collective responsibility, student participation and sanitation clubs in promoting awareness on hygiene practices. The sessions also provided a platform to address topics such as menstrual hygiene and personal cleanliness, encouraging students to promote WASH practices in their schools and communities.
The sessions also included games, group discussions and exercises focusing on WASH components such as menstrual hygiene management, hygiene practices, handwashing techniques and community participation in maintaining sanitation facilities.
