A 05-Day State Level Workshop on Pedagogy and Assessment began today in the auditorium of DIET Gangtok, organised by SCERT, Education Department, Govt. of Sikkim in collaboration with Azim Premji University (APU), Bengaluru. The inaugural session of the workshop was graced by Dr. Shanti Ram Adhikari, Director-in-Charge, SCERT, Sikkim, as the Chief Guest. Other attendees included Deputy Director, SCERT– Shri Rajiv Phillip, Principal DIET Gangtok – Shri Tshering Wangdi Bhutia, Faculties and staff of SCERT and over 70 Post Graduate Teachers of government schools teaching History and Economics representing different districts of Sikkim.
Dr. Shanti Ram Adhikari – Director-in-Charge, SCERT, welcomed the Resource Persons from APU Bengaluru and Mr. Matrika Sharma – Resource Person cum member of the textbook writing team of NCERT from PM SHRI GSSS Dikling by offering ‘khadas’. Dr. Adhikari also warmly welcomed all the 70 participants – 35
History PGTs and 35 Economics PGTs. Setting the context of the program, he emphasised on the need for training of Social Science teachers of Sikkim on a regular basis, drawing inferences from the various educational surveys conducted from time to time that shows a dismal performance of students in the subject.
Besides, the training in the beginning of the session would add to the teachers’ repertoire and sharpen their skills, enabling them to focus on a smooth transition from content- based to competency-based learning, thereby adhering to the recommendations of NEP 2020 and National Curriculum Frameworks (NCF). One of them is the Capacity Building of Teachers (50 hours of CPD in a year) and Holistic Progress Card (HPC) that necessitates and leads to a greater synergy between content, pedagogy and assessment. Dr. Adhikari congratulated the participants for having been the chosen ones from the district who subsequently would have to train the teachers in their respective blocks.
The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Lensong Lepcha, Assistant Professor, SCERT and coordinator of the programme.
In the post-tea session, the participants were divided into two subject-wise groups and engaged in various subject enrichment activities. The workshop from 9th – 13th March, 2026 would be focusing on subject- specific innovative pedagogy and assessment practices aimed at making learning joyful and student-centric.
