Gyalshing District Hosts Mega event of ASMITA League on the occasion of IWD Celebration at Pelling Ground.
Gyalshing,March 8:On the occasion of International Women's Day,2026, a mega sports event of ASMITA League was organised at Govt Pelling Senior Secondary School (SSS) ground, bringing together athletes, officials, and members of the community to promote women’s participation and empowerment through sports.
The programme was jointly organised by Khelo India, My Bharat Sikkim and department of Sports and Youth affairs Gyalshing District.
The event was graced by the District Collector Gyalshing,Mr Tenzing D Denzongpa as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Second -in-Command Officer, 72Bn SSB Shri Narayan Ram Khadaw as the Guest of Honour and Ms Srijana Subba, International Athlete of Kickboxing from Gyalshing as a Youth Icon for youngsters. Their presence added great encouragement to the participants and highlighted the importance of supporting women in sports and leadership roles.
District Collector congratulated the girls and women on the occasion of International Women's Day and highlighted their importance in every walk of life, from home to public space.
Officials from various government departments, sports authorities, and local organisations were also present during the event. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from women athletes and sports enthusiasts, reflecting the growing spirit of sportsmanship and empowerment among women in the district.
The Asmita Women’s League aims to provide a platform for women athletes to showcase their talent, build confidence, and promote gender equality in sports. During the programme, three athletics events - 100 M, 200 M and 400 M in three age categories, including below 13 yrs, 13-18 yrs and above 18 yrs were conducted as competitive events where selected winners will be attached with the National Sports Repository for talent enhancement. Additionally, Shotput and Tug of War were conducted for different institutions, including ICDS, DIET, SGC and other schools and colleges. The mega ASMITA League event witnessed more than 300 participants marking sports as a key domain to be pursued by women and girls on this special occasion of International Women's Day.
During the inaugural ceremony Mr Mangal Jakhar Deputy Director MY Bharat Sikkim briefed about the ASMITA League event and it's importance in providing opportunities to women athletes and welcomed all the guests.
Principal GSSS, Pelling, as a women's icon, observed the sports pledge and opened the ASMITA League here at Pelling.
Ms Srijana Subba, national and international kickboxing athlete and her coach Mr Gopal Subba, were also felicitated in the programme for their achievements.
Ms Nickjey Lamu Bhutia, Additional Director, SYA Sikkim, proposed the vote of thanks and appreciated the participation of all stakeholders during the event. She highlighted the importance of sports in one's life and encouraged young athletes to pursue sports.
The event concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates and appreciation for all the participants, organisers, and supporters who contributed to making the celebration a meaningful and successful occasion.
