Joint Inspection Conducted at Lower Luing and Lingding, Gangtok
Gangtok, 7th March 2026 — As per the direction of the District Collector, Gangtok District, a joint inspection was carried out on 7th March 2026 following a complaint received from members of the public residing at Lower Luing, Ranka–Gangtok.
The inspection team was led by the Joint Director, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok, representing the District Administration. The team comprised officials from the Mines, Minerals & Geology Department led by the Joint Director, the Deputy Director (Revenue) from the District Collectorate, the Block Development Officer of Ranka, Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer from the Roads & Bridges Department, the concerned Ward Panchayat representative, and the complainants.
During the inspection, the team examined the site and observed visible cracks on the heavy retaining wall along the Samdur Highway near Luing Garden. In view of the potential safety concerns, the officials from the Mines, Minerals & Geology Department have been directed to submit a detailed report assessing the land condition and identifying the possible causes of the cracks. Simultaneously, the Roads & Bridges Department has been instructed to undertake necessary repair and stabilization work on the retaining wall at the earliest to prevent any possible mishaps in the near future.
Following the inspection at Lower Luing, the team also visited the Slum Rehabilitation area under the Urban Development Department (UDD) at Lingding. The visit was conducted in coordination with the Joint Chief Town Planner and her team to review the status and conditions of the rehabilitation site.
The District Administration has assured that necessary measures will be taken based on the technical reports and observations made during the joint inspection to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the area.
