A hands-on orientation training programme for the officers and staff of the Kitchudumra De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre (DDAC) was conducted on 6th March 2026 to strengthen protocol compliance and ensure proper implementation of medical and treatment procedures at the centre.
The training session was facilitated by Shri Mahesh Sharma (Additional Director, Social Welfare Department), Shri Ram Kumar Tamang (Deputy Director, Social Welfare Department), and Dr. Satish Rasaily (Senior Consultant and De-addiction Medicine Specialist, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Sikkim).
During the programme, the resource persons outlined the aims and objectives of the Kitchudumra De-addiction Centre, emphasizing the importance of adopting evidence-based treatment approaches for the management of alcohol and substance use disorders. The officers also elaborated on the treatment principles to be followed at the centre, admission procedures, and the importance of maintaining proper documentation and protocol compliance in delivering rehabilitation services.
The orientation highlighted the need for strong institutional linkages with Jorethang Community Health Centre (CHC) and the Department of Psychiatry, Namchi District Hospital to ensure adequate detoxification and proper management of co-morbid medical and psychiatric disorders often associated with long-term alcohol and substance use.
The programme was also attended by Dr. Tsepel Eden (MD Psychiatry, Namchi District Hospital) and Dr. Rahul Mukhia (Medical Officer In-charge, Jorethang CHC). Nursing staff, psychologists, inspectors and officers from the Social Welfare Department, along with members of partner NGOs who will play a key role in the implementation and management of the programme at the centre, were also present during the training.
Their participation reinforced the importance of a multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental approach in addressing alcohol and substance use disorders. The collaboration between healthcare professionals, Social Welfare officials, and NGOs will help ensure comprehensive treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, and sustained recovery support for individuals seeking treatment at the Kitchudumra De-addiction Centre.
The programme concluded with an interactive session and practical orientation, allowing the staff to clarify operational procedures and strengthen coordination between the Health Department and Social Welfare Department for effective implementation of services at the centre.
The Kitchudumra De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre is now equipped and prepared to begin admitting patients and initiating effective treatment services in the near future, marking an important step towards strengthening addiction treatment and rehabilitation services in the State.
