The District Education Office, Gangtok, conducted a day-long training programme on Fire Safety measures and a demonstration on handling & operation of fire extinguishing equipment for Heads of Elementary and Primary Schools under Gangtok District at PM Shri Biraspati Parsai Senior Secondary School, Ranipool today. The event saw participation from school heads under Nandok, Martam, and Ranka Blocks, along with teachers and students of the host school.
The programme kicked off with a warm welcome address by Assistant Director, Ms. Rinzing Ongmu Bhutia, followed by the ceremonial offering of khadas to esteemed guests from the Directorate of Fire & Emergency Service, Gangtok Station, Deputy Director of the District Education Office, and the Principal of the host school.
During the technical session, Mr. Mathew Rai, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Sikkim Fire and Emergency Services, Gangtok Station, emphasized key fire safety measures for schools, including regular fire drills, maintenance of fire extinguishers, and installation of dedicated water tanks for firefighting. A practical demonstration on the use of fire extinguishers was conducted by Station Fire Officer, Ms. Deepti Gurung, and team, showcasing the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. School heads actively participated in the hands-on demonstration, gaining valuable insights into fire safety protocols.
Ms. Tshering Bhutia, Assistant Director, District Education Department, hosted the programme and managed the overall coordination.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Deputy Director, Mr Phurba Dorjee Shenga, DEO expressing gratitude to the Fire Department officials, participating school heads, and the district and school teams for their support in making the event a success.
