Sikkim Milk Union Strengthens Dairy Cooperatives through NPDD Awareness Programs at Daramdin and Namchi–Singithang.
Gangtok, February 2026
The Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (SMU), under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), successfully organized two consecutive one-day Awareness Programmes on Clean Milk Production (CMP) and Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) on 19th February 2026 at Saprey Nagi Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society under Daramdin Constituency and on 23rd February 2026 at Upper Salghari Community Hall under Namchi–Singithang Constituency.
At Saprey Nagi, the programe was graced by Shri Y.K. Sharma, Hon’ble Chairman, SMU, as Chief Guest, in the presence of Zilla Panchayat Member, Panchayat representatives, Board of Directors, Managing Director Dr. T.B. Ghatani, cooperative officials, and around 120 dairy farmers from seven societies. The Chief Guest inaugurated the newly constructed BMC shed, sanctioned ₹5 lakh under NPDD, with an additional contribution of ₹9.65 lakh mobilized by the Society, reflecting exemplary cooperative spirit.
Established in 1987, the Society is presently receiving around ₹97 lakh annually through milk sales, incentives, and other benefits.
The programme at Upper Salghari was graced by Shri Dewan Rai, Hon’ble Vice Chairman, SMU, as Chief Guest, in the presence of officials from AH&VS and Cooperation Departments, Panchayat members, and about 100 dairy farmers.
Technical sessions emphasized cooperative strength, timely audit, clean milk production, and dairy farming as a sustainable livelihood while also highlighting strategies to address fodder scarcity.
One dairy farmers from each MCS were distributed with an allotment order for hand driven chaffcutter.
In both the programs, all the dairy farmers present in the meetings received deworming medecines and mineral mixtures for their cows .
The Chief Guests highlighted various farmer-centric initiatives of the government, including ₹8 per liter milk incentive, cash awards to best performing societies, Gwala Diwas, and continued infrastructure and marketing support through the Milk Union.
These programs reaffirm the commitment of Sikkim Milk Union towards strengthening dairy cooperatives, improving milk quality, and enhancing farmers’ income across the state.
