Gyalshing,February 16:The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Gyalshing, under the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, successfully organised an awareness programme on various child rights legislations to sensitise the community on issues concerning child protection and welfare under the guidance of Ms Bhawana Subba,DCPO Gyalshing.
The programme was graciously attended by the concerned Panchayat President, Panchayat Members , Head Master, teachers, students, and members of the general public of Rimbik, reflecting strong community participation and collective commitment towards safeguarding children’s rights.
Mr Prabin Gurung, Supervisor (CHL), conducted an informative session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), child marriage, and the services of Child Helpline (1098). He highlighted the legal provisions under the POCSO Act, preventive measures against child marriage, and the importance of reporting cases of abuse or distress through the child helpline to ensure timely intervention and support.
Mr Yogesh Nerola, Protection Officer (PO), delivered a comprehensive session on issues related to child labour and child trafficking, emphasising the provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention)Act. He also discussed the Mission Vatsalya Scheme (MVS), emphasising its role in strengthening the child protection system, supporting vulnerable children, and ensuring their safety, care, and development through institutional and non-institutional services. In addition, he sensitised the participants on the prohibition of drug and substance abuse among children and adolescents, stressing the harmful effects of substance abuse on physical and mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. He urged parents, teachers, and community members to remain vigilant.
The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Ms Chungmu Tamang, Supervisor (CHL).
