Kisan Goshti and Field Demonstration on Biochar Conducted at KVK Namthang.
Namchi, 11 February 2026: A Kisan Goshti-cum-training and hands-on field demonstration on biochar was successfully organized at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Namthang, under ATMA, Agriculture Department, Namchi, as part of the Soil Health and Fertility Management initiative on 10th February.
The programme, themed “Renewing Soil Health through Biochar,” aimed to create awareness among farmers on sustainable soil management practices and the importance of improving soil fertility through eco-friendly and climate-resilient technologies.
The technical session and field demonstration were conducted by the resource persons Ms. Anshumi and Ms. Shurabhi from the Biochar Centre of Excellence, Hyderabad (Kanha), who shared scientific and practical knowledge on the preparation, properties, and field application of biochar in different cropping systems.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Meena Sharma, ADO Namthang, who highlighted the importance of soil health management and the need for adopting innovative practices such as biochar for sustainable agriculture.
A few words were also shared by Shri I.P. Shivakoti, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Namthang, emphasizing the role of organic carbon enhancement and integrated nutrient management for long-term soil productivity.
During the Kisan Goshti, farmers actively interacted with the resource persons and discussed local soil fertility challenges. The session highlighted key benefits of biochar, including improvement of soil structure, enhanced nutrient retention, increased microbial activity, improved water-holding capacity, and reduced dependence on chemical fertilizers.
A live field demonstration was conducted to demonstrate the correct method and dosage of biochar application and its integration with organic manure. Farmers showed keen interest and actively participated in the practical session.
Biochar samples were distributed among the participating farmers, and selected farmers were identified for field-level application and observation to assess crop response and soil health improvement under local conditions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nation Chamling, Deputy Project Director, ATMA.
Among others present during the programme were Mr. Wangyal Lepcha, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Namchi, SMS of KVK, ADOs, Inspectors, VLWs, FA, MA, and a large number of progressive farmers.
The Agriculture Department reiterated its commitment to promoting innovative, climate-smart, and sustainable soil health technologies to enhance productivity and improve farmers’ livelihoods.
